On the flip side, feeding your Page with regular updates can be enough to grow your fanbase and find clients. However, there is more you can do to grow your fanbase and increase the chances of fans becoming clients./p
pHere are three advanced strategies you can use as-is, or adapt for your business:/p
h21. Facebook Contests/h2
pHold a contest on your Page and offer your services, or a related product, as the prize. This increases awareness of what you do, and boosts engagement with exactly the right people: those who need your services./p
pHow people enter the contest is up to you. The simplest contest is where anyone who likes your Page is entered./p
pYou can ask your fans to do more, however, especially if you#8217;re offering a valuable prize. You could use the contest to help you develop ideas for your business. For example, you could ask your fans to come up with ideas for a tagline for your business, or share which of your services they#8217;d be most likely to use, or explain the problems they have that they need the most help solving./p
pAlternatively, you can use a contest to get your fans to engage more with your Page. A freelance gardener could ask entrants to post a picture of their best garden plant; a programmer could ask fans to share their favorite computer or programming related joke; a writer could ask fans to share an inspiring quote about writing or creativity./p

You don#8217;t want to lose potential clients because you#8217;ve given away your best knowledge for free. On the other hand, don#8217;t keep everything back. The whole point of holding a surgery is to help your clients see that your advice works for them./p
pA bonus of holding a surgery is that it gives you insight into the biggest problems and pain points of potential clients. When you know these, you can adapt your services accordingly to put yourself in higher demand./p
h23. Time Limited Facebook Coupons/h2
pstrong /strongA strategy that works well for freelancers with a large roster of clients #8211; such as hair dressers, fitness trainers, life coaches, janitors, or landscape gardeners #8211; is to offer a time-limited discount coupon or code from their Facebook Page. This encourages fans to become first-time buyers, or if they#8217;ve bought from you before, it encourages them to book your services again soon./p
pCoupons can also be used to manage your workflow. For example, if Wednesdays are always quiet for your business, you could offer a coupon that can only be redeemed on Wednesdays./p
pFeaturing special offers regularly on your Page, whether it#8217;s once a week, once a month or once a quarter, is a way of encouraging fans to frequently check-in to see your latest updates./p

h3Using Your Facebook Page as an Outreach Tool/h3
pOne of the arguments for using a href="http://freelanceswitch.com/freelance-marketing/facebook-groups-pages-profiles/"Profiles over Pages/a for promoting your freelance business is that Profiles are better for networking. While it#8217;s true that Profiles are a good networking tool #8211; particularly for sending one-to-one messages #8211; Pages can also be used powerfully for public networking./p
pThe aim of networking is to get your name out there and known among potential clients. When people know you, they trust you. So when they think #8220;who should I hire to do this job?#8221;, you#8217;ll be one of the people who springs to mind. As such, this networking strategy is about using Facebook to get your name and business known and trusted among potential clients. I#8217;ve used variations of this strategy to find a good proportion of my clients./p
pThe strategy works best if it#8217;s targeted. Begin by creating a hit list of potential clients and influencers in your niche. I suggest limiting your list to ten people to start with. If you#8217;re unsure who to put on your list, do some research. Though it#8217;s Twitter-based, a href="http://listorious.com/"Listorious/a is an excellent search tool for finding influencers in a particular niche, many of whom will be on Facebook as well. Similarly, a href="http://www.twellow.com/"Twellow/a provides a Yellow Pages style directory of Twitter users./p
pIdeally, you want to choose Facebook Pages that are managed by the person who will hire you. As such, this strategy works best if your prospects are small businesses, social media marketing managers, or high profile individuals with a Facebook Page./p
pOnce you#8217;ve created your hit list:/p

liLog-in to your Facebook Page and Like the Facebook Page of everyone on your hit list./li
liLeave valuable comments on the Page of every person in your hit list once or twice a week. These should contribute to the discussion, and should never be self promotional./li
liShare status updates from their Pages on your Page that are relevant to your audience./li
liPost updates to your Page in which you tag the Page of people on your hit list. For example, share a quote they#8217;ve said, or use one of their success stories as a small case study. To tag someone, type #8220;@#8221; followed by their Page name./li
liPosting and tagging photos is even more powerful. For example, you could post the cover of a book written by someone on your hit list, tag it with their name, and explain in the photo caption how the book inspired you. If you#8217;ve met someone on your hit list in person, post a photo of you together, tag it, and explain in the caption why you appreciated meeting them./li
liShow up outside Facebook. Follow your hit list on Twitter. Retweet and reply to their tweets. Comment on their blog. Connect on LinkedIn. Subscribe to their email list./li

pFirst, it?s important to understand the vehicle, the medium, in which we are sending out our message. This is so basic, but many marketers and copywriters take this obvious step for granted. Often the marketing vehicle is established based on opportunity, but it might not be the right delivery mechanism for your audience and needs. We?ll assume we know email is the best direction for our offer and our online, Web savvy, surfing audience. Now let?s consider all the elements for a writer that make up email delivery./p
pstrongFrom line:/strong when receiving email, this is the first place most people look. If it?s a trusted source, from a friend, from a recognized name, from a site often visited, the chances of opening the email increase exponentially. This is why transactional emails?like to finalize a sale, to open a receipt, or to become a member of a site?have the highest open rates from businesses. In theory, your from line should remain consistent throughout your emails to engender trust and a modicum of brand awareness./p
pstrongSubject line:/strong Here we have about 50 character spaces that can make or break all your efforts. It?s a topic that requires its own chapter in the book of building better emails. To encourage readers to open your email, the subject line needs to be straightforward; and, to convert opens to click-throughs, the subject line must be truly representative of the content./p
pI like the axiom ?tell don?t sell? for subject lines. Selling reads like spam. Try to be as simple and direct as possible. For a newsletter, a subject line like ?Our Dec. Newsletter? actually tests quite well. The assumption here is that the reader subscribed for updates and wants your email. If possible, make your subject line relate to the reason someone joined your list. Was it to receive news or discounts?/p
pIf you can personalize and segment your list, it?s often helpful to inject this into the subject line, along with a sense of urgency. Deadlines and real breaking news work wonderfully. ?Discounts for Jeff until Dec. 31st? promises results. But this also assumes you understand something about the relationship between frequency, relevancy, and audience. Together, these elements work to define your success./p
pstrongSpam keywords:/strong Every marketing delivery vehicle comes with challenges to overcome and with email it?s spam. As copywriters, we need to ensure we avoid spam filters by avoiding spam keywords. This is essentially a discussion of too many capitalized words like FREE repeated numerous times, followed by too many exclamation marks. If you write the way a sideshow barker yells to passerby on a summer beach boardwalk, you?ll need to tone it down. Otherwise you should be safe. Luckily, any decent email software system nowadays offers automated spam keyword checks prior to sending out a campaign./p
pstrongEmail writing style:/strong This whole article informs your writing. But it?s also important to consider the general writing style in terms of this vehicle. According to most tests, people like writing about the length of their attention span; that is: short. Readers don?t generally look to the screen for lengthy prose. Keep your emails short and to the point. Brevity works, with headlines, sub-headlines, call-outs and bullet points that break up text for quick scanning. Try for simple, plain-sounding language sprinkled with action verbs./p
h3Improved creative briefs lead to successful campaigns/h3
pWhen starting a writing project I always begin with a creative brief. Every ad agency has their version of the creative brief at the beginning of the process. The information needed is always similar. These are the essentials needed before creative development can commence?audience, intention, message, delivery? They are so basic. Then why are some of these ad aspects often ignored or misunderstood? Let?s take a closer look at some of the elements from a creative brief you?ll need to write email copy that turns into sales./p
h4Audience/h4
p?The people who will receive my email? is not a definition of audience for a copywriter. In the case of email, you should be extraordinarily specific since segmenting a list with different offers is a simple matter of automation. Elements might include gender, age, nationality, family, location, likes and dislikes, purchase history, etc. span class="pullquote"Understanding the audience is one the building blocks and keys to all successful campaigns./span/p
pI believe it?s an imperative to fully envision the audience receiving the email. Who are they? Where are they? What are the circumstances? When did they open the email? What email client do they use? Are they at home or at work? Are their kids in the background screaming? Or are those voices just college roommates? How is this offer going to get this person to react?/p
h4Intention/h4
pWhat is the single clear intention of this email? I find it extraordinarily helpful to define the single clear intention, especially for larger organizations with a bureaucratic system of approvals. I want a singular purpose. In this case, what is the reason we are sending this email? ?To make a sale? is too quick of an answer, unless your audience can finalize the sale in the email. Instead, the job of the email is to encourage people to click. Now what is the reason they will click? We want only one reason for an effective sales email./p
pA single clear intention for email might look like: ?extol the virtues of our peanut butter as an organic product?. Be sure not to reduce the value of your product or service by suggesting people will click because of the offer ? such as discount price point or free shipping. Equipped with this information, we can focus our writing and messaging. Often, any product information outside of the single clear intention I like strike from the email./p
h4Offer/h4
pWhat is the tie-in and reason to purchase? Now that you have my attention with creative connected to the single clear intention, I need that extra nudge to encourage an immediate sale, especially for purchases that are based on emotional and impulse buying. This is the discount, the giveaway, the mega-sale, the deadline, the sense of urgency, the reason I will take action now./p
h4Messaging/h4
pOften in broad-based campaigns the messaging has already been developed with a tagline and headline for the Web site, the print ads, or other marketing collateral. Often it may be tied into the product?s brand positioning or the unique selling propositions. Given our single clear intention, what are the words and ways that we use to define and describe our products or services? I?ve found for many small business owners, they have detailed knowledge of the messaging but it must be coerced from their anecdotes and experience. This is great area for writing exercises and exploration./p
h4Call-to-action/h4
pThis is basic and paramount for marketing: Ask for the sale. Click here. Call today. What are you asking your reader to do? What would it say in the vision of the horribly designed orange starburst at the top of the page? This is easy in email?usually we want more visits to our landing page. But I?ve seen this discussion lead to restructuring of an organization?s entire CRM system. How can a potential customer connect? Do you provide enough information?/p
h4Voice/h4
pThe voice is an important element that must be defined before the writing begins. Usually voice has been established long ago based on the brand positioning and the audience. Voice defines the mood of the words as well as the layout and artwork. Is this ?polite, professional, intelligent? or how about ?witty and youthful??/p
pVoice for me often leads to a discussion of ad versus direct mail copywriting. Perhaps you?re struggling to extend your brand awareness and to make offers that read more like poetry. Or maybe you don?t care so much about winning creative accolades, but improved metrics and sales would be a welcome holiday bonus. Knowing this is extraordinarily helpful for the copywriter to define voice. /p
h3Engage, educate and empower your readers/h3
pThere are many ad agencies that sell their services based on methodologies. This seems to attract large bureaucratic companies. One such approach that I learned was based on these three Es. You can examine your creative execution to determine if the email copywriting is working./p
pDoes the copy engage audiences? This is the job of the subject line first, then the headline and the connection to artwork. Will it attract my eye given all the other offers and emails in my inbox? Does the copy educate?providing relevant information that this audience wants? And does it empower, with call to actions and links that lead audiences to the next step?/p
pCrafting effective language takes time, energy, thought, experience, testing, editing and rewriting. This bears repeating, as many people I know go out of their way to express the fact that they are not writers. They maintain a fallacy that an effective writer pumps out nearly perfect copy in minutes./p
pFor overall email success, please keep in mind that here we?re only covering writing aspects of your email campaign. There are many other elements to consider and connect, such as design, deliverability, HTML versus text, CAN SPAM laws, list procurement, timing, frequency? Ultimately, defining #8220;effective#8221; campaigns will be informed by your needs and determined through testing. But practicing and considering some of these ideas have helped numerous companies dramatically improve their odds. I hope you find the same success./p

Then came the internet, allowing people to network from safety, tucked away behind their keyboard. With a sigh of relief, networkers gained newfound confidence and began mingling with almost anyone. The pressure to get out and attend face-to-face events diminished./p
pBut there?s still something to be said for personal connections, and today, successful entrepreneurs are realizing that good, old fashioned meetings are still an important part of the recipe./p
pIf you?ve spent years cultivating a strong presence on social media, don?t panic ? social networking is, and will continue to be, an important part of your overall marketing campaign. But if it?s been a while since you?ve gone out and actively met with your prospects, it might be time to see what?s out there.span id="more-34570"/span/p
h3Where do I go?/h3
pFinding a networking group you are comfortable with is key to success. If you?re a one-woman operation based in the suburbs, heading into the city to attend a crowded, high profile event might not give you the confidence boost that good networking requires. To find an event that?s right for you:/p

liAsk colleagues in your area if they belong to any groups./li
liRun a search for networking groups in your town and nearby towns./li
liLook for a local meeting of BNI International, your Chamber of Commerce, or the Rotary Club./li
liCheck with your library, which often hosts job seekers groups, or knows of in-town organizations./li

pMost networking groups work on a yearly membership basis, and annual fees can range from $50 to $500.� Before you start writing checks, ask if you can attend an initial meeting without paying the fee; most groups are happy to let you sample the waters. Or, look for pay-as-you-go organizations, in which you pay at the door for each event you go to./p
pOnce you?ve found a group you like, go ahead and pay the membership fee. It?s tax deductible, probably includes some marketing perks, and may help keep you motivated to get to periodic meetings./p

pIf you?re fortunate enough not to be bothered by nerves, go ahead and approach different people at the event. Give out your card, talk about your business, and chat about the weather or sports./p
pAfter the allotted time for mingling and refreshments, there may be a formal meeting or speaker, so you can settle in to learn something new about your business./p
pEntrepreneurs today are lucky; attending live networking events isn?t the only way to spread your word. But keeping up with some form of face-to-face client seeking has many benefits. People are more likely to hire someone that they?ve met and liked. Going out to meetings can break up the isolation that tends to accompany freelancing. And hearing from others in the business, and listening to yourself talk about your own successful business, is sure to send you home rejuvenated and inspired./p
