Ask FreelanceSwitch: Hiring a Sales Person and Starting Out

pa href='http://rss.buysellads.com/click.php?z=1259904k=f7b7931ec28da9e4ff2580bfd4eddb18a=21301c=1830244172' target='_blank'
img src='http://rss.buysellads.com/img.php?z=1259904k=f7b7931ec28da9e4ff2580bfd4eddb18a=21301c=1830244172' border='0' alt='' //a/pbr /pimg src="https://freelanceswitch.s3.amazonaws.com/general_images/askfsw.jpg" alt="Ask Freelanceswitch" width="520" height="250" class="aligncenter size-full" //p
pIn this issue of Ask FreelanceSwitch, we look at hiring a sales person and getting started as a freelancer. Ask FreelanceSwitch is a regular column here that allows us to help beginners get a grip on freelancing. If you have a question about freelancing that you want answered, send an email to askfreelanceswitch@gmail.com./p
h2Question 1/h2
blockquotepI think this question is pretty good, but I#8217;m not able to find good answers./p
pThe context of the question: I#8217;m a programmer working as a freelancer, things are going good, but most of the jobs I get are from 2 or 3 agencies. /p
pOne day my brother asks me if I wanted him to sell my services. I liked the idea, replacing agencies with a member of my family is very tempting. But now I face the problem of training him. Not only in what I do and what he can sell, but also in how to sell this kind of services./p/blockquote
pI have seen freelancers using a sales person to bring in business for them, usually paying a cut of each project as a commission. Sometimes it works out well and sometimes it?s not so great./p
pThe biggest problem that I?ve seen (and the reason I haven?t gone this route) is that if your sales person doesn?t have a good network ? people actually interested in buying services from freelancers ? he isn?t going to get very far. Before you dive in too deep, you need to talk through who your potential sales person thinks he?s going to sell to and why they may buy./p
pOnce that issue is dealt with, you need to walk your sales person through your portfolio. He may need a copy of his own, at least of the perfect projects you show potential clients. He really needs to see the range of projects that you take on, though: break it down in terms of what the client wanted, what you delivered, how long it took and how much you charged. You have to have an understanding on what things cost (appropriately raised to be able to afford your sales person?s commission) and how long they take, or your sales person can put you in an awkward position./p
pEven though you?re talking about working with family, it?s a good move to write out what you?re both agreeing to and signing it. Whether you put things in the form of a letter of agreement or a contract, get it on paper./p
h2Question 2/h2
blockquotepI am from India. I have just completed my graphic designing course. I am quite passionate about freelancing and want to make my career in freelancing. /p
pI have some questions:/p
ol
liIs there a need to register a freelancing company at the beginning?/li
liAs a designer, we need images to work. Can I use any image from the net rather then buying them?/li
liWhat if I have worked on a image which I haven?t purchased, and the owner sees it?/li
liAm I supposed to buy the design software for working as a freelancer?/li
liSince I haven?t entered the designing business as a professional, I am not aware of the cost of designing products, like what should be the price of logo, visiting card, brochure, image manipulation, image retouching, color correction, background removing, web template, flash banner, etc. so can you please tell me the average price of these products?/li
/ol
/blockquote
pstrongRegistering as a company/strong: Whether or not you need to register your business as a company depends on where you?re working. You need to check both the national regulations and the laws for your city or municipality to check what is required. The same goes for all laws affecting your freelance business, by the way, including taxes./p
pstrongBuying images/strong: You should never use images that you just find online, rather than purchasing stock images or taking your own. You can be sued for using images that you haven?t properly licensed./p
pstrongShowing images to clients/strong: Don?t show your clients any images that you can?t buy if they decide to move forward with the project. It?s okay to show watermarked images and images you haven?t yet purchased to a client for approval, but that?s all./p
pstrongBuying software/strong: As a freelancer, your clients will expect you to have the software you need to do your work already. Clients will not provide you with software to handle your projects, as a general rule./p
pstrongSetting prices/strong: Deciding the price for your services is very much a process that each freelancer has to go through on his or her own. There isn?t a set rate that works universally for something like designing a brochure. /p
pWhere you?re based, the quality of your work, whether or not you help your client with printing or hosting and all sorts of other details all figure in to setting a price. You can get a general idea of the hourly rate you need to base your prices on by going through a href="http://freelanceswitch.com/rates/"FreelanceSwitch?s rate calculator/a./p

Give Yourself a Raise in 2012

pa href='http://rss.buysellads.com/click.php?z=1259904k=f7b7931ec28da9e4ff2580bfd4eddb18a=22748c=763002119' target='_blank'
img src='http://rss.buysellads.com/img.php?z=1259904k=f7b7931ec28da9e4ff2580bfd4eddb18a=22748c=763002119' border='0' alt='' //a/pbr /pimg class="aligncenter size-full imageborder wp-image-22749" src="http://freelanceswitch.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/money-bar.jpg" alt="" width="548" height="365" //p
pI really liked a href="http://mashable.com/2011/12/19/freelance-raise-rates/"this article on Mashable.com?s business page/a about giving yourself a raise in 2012. With the economy being what it is (and has been), the thought of raising your freelancing rates might make your heart rate increase and sweat collect on your forehead. Before you go ballistic, ask yourself this question: when was the last time you a href="http://freelanceswitch.com/money/setting-rate-experience-based/"adjusted your rates/a? If it was a decade ago?it?s time to give yourself a raise./p
pWhether you are a writer, photographer, or graphic designer, you need to make sure your current freelancing rates match your abilities./p
blockquotepWith the rise of the Freelance or Gig Economy, more professionals are shifting from full-time positions to self-employed, freelance or contract roles. And often, for company employees accustomed to regular raises and pre-determined fee hikes, the notion of being in charge of one?s own prices is challenging. em?Nellie Akalp for Mashable /em/p/blockquote
pHow long have you been in business? If you are still charging the a href="http://freelanceswitch.com/freelance-writing/beginning-freelance-writer/#more-20311"same low rates you started out with/a to get your foot in the door, you are a href="http://freelanceswitch.com/freelancing-essentials/failing-freelance-career/#more-20999"shooting yourself in that same foot/a./p
pspan id="more-22748"/span/p
pTake a look at your client list. How long have you been working with them at your current rate? What have you learned and what skills have you acquired since you first started working with them? You are providing more value today than you were five years ago, so raising your rates?even a little?makes perfect sense./p
h3How do you do it without freaking your clients out?/h3
pStart with a small increase?this Mashable article suggests an increase of 10-15%. Let your current clients know that you are already using this rate with new clients and be sure to give them enough time to digest your new pricing before hitting them with a higher invoice. Don?t be open to a href="http://freelanceswitch.com/clients/the-25-challenge-become-a-negotiation-ninja/"negotiations/a?you?ll just get yourself into a pickle. Be firm./p
pDon?t feel like raising the rates of your existing clients? Raise the rates for each new client until you get used to charging more. Then, when you?re ready, you can talk to your existing clients about raising their rates to match your new client rates./p
pIf you lose clients over your rate increase, don?t take it personally. If you choose the rate increase wisely, your clients will take your increase in stride./p
blockquotepIn the majority of cases, clients will accept reasonable increases with relative ease. However, be prepared for a client or two to walk away rather than accept your new rates. If you?re confident with the value you deliver, don?t worry about the clients who walked. Most likely, those clients weren?t the best fit anyway. It?s best to move on to bigger and better things. em?Mashable/em/p/blockquote
pThe main thing to remember is to be confident about your new rate. Do your homework and find out what other freelancers are charging for their services. Find out what the going rate for your work is in the areas where your clients are located. A client based in New York City might be more comfortable with your rate increases than someone in, say, rural Nebraska./p
pAbove all, a href="http://freelanceswitch.com/blog/explore/pricing-your-services/"make your rates fair/a. Charge what you are worth, even if it makes you uncomfortable. As a freelancer, you don?t have a boss to give you a raise, and your clients aren?t going to offer to pay you more ?just because?, I assure you! There is no time like the beginning of a new year to implement changes?so what are you waiting for?/p
pHave you recently raised your rates? How did you handle the situation?/p

How to Use Great Testimonials, Once You Get Them

pa href='http://rss.buysellads.com/click.php?z=1259904k=f7b7931ec28da9e4ff2580bfd4eddb18a=22302c=1003973043' target='_blank'
img src='http://rss.buysellads.com/img.php?z=1259904k=f7b7931ec28da9e4ff2580bfd4eddb18a=22302c=1003973043' border='0' alt='' //a/pbr /pimg src="http://freelanceswitch.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/man-giving-thumbs-up-sign.jpg" alt="" title="Man Giving Thumbs Up Sign" width="550" height="365" class="aligncenter imageborder size-full wp-image-22312" //p
pAs freelancers, we?re told to collect as many testimonials as possible ? but what do we do with all those great descriptions of how amazing we are to work with? /p
pThere are some people who believe that testimonials should be plastered over everything, from business cards on. But there are a few uses for great testimonials that are particularly effective.span id="more-22302"/span/p
h3Your Website Needs Testimonials/h3
pJust where you put your testimonials on your website can differ, but you absolutely need them. It?s fairly rare these days for freelancers to hand out brochures ? for most of us, our websites are the only piece of marketing collateral that a potential client will see. So that?s where the testimonials ?proving? our abilities need to be./p
blockquote class="pullquote"pI want someone who is thinking about hiring to see those testimonials right away#8230;/p/blockquote
pI have a personal preference for including short descriptions about how fantastic a freelancer I am right next to where I list out the services I offer. /p
pI want someone who is thinking about hiring to see those testimonials right away and realize that plenty of other people have found working with me to be great. Other places where a testimonial can be effective include near your navigational elements (so that readers get a good look at them) and on the front page of your site./p
pHaving a page devoted to testimonials is popular, especially with freelancers who have been in business for a while and have collected some really great statements from past clients. The only argument against such an approach is that many people will skip over such a page as they look for your prices and other pertinent information. /p
pIntegrating your testimonials into the rest of the site can be important to winning over new clients. It?s also worth noting that a testimonials page with only one or two positive comments is a very sad testimonials page, indeed. You need to have a few more testimonials than that to make it effective./p
h3Adding Testimonials to Other Marketing Materials/h3
pDepending on what other marketing materials you?re using to promote your freelance services, it may be worth checking over your testimonials to see if you have something relevant. /p
blockquote class="pullquote pqRight"pA general testimonial just won?t do the trick./p/blockquote
pAdding a statement from a past client just for the purpose of ?proving? that you?re a great freelancer isn?t always the best option ? if you?re promoting something specific, like a package deal, you need to either include a testimonial that speaks specifically about the impact of that deal or leave it off entirely. A general testimonial just won?t do the trick./p
pBut whether you?re creating a landing page or a post card, the right testimonial can really enhance your ability to convince new clients to sign on with you. /p
pIf you don?t have that ideal testimonial yet, it may be worth trying to get it. That could mean contacting clients who you?ve completed specific types of projects for and asking them for a testimonial about the results or even seeking out a few new clients who would be useful for getting testimonials from (that could mean giving them a discount or other incentive in order to be sure you land the gig)./p
h3Use Your Testimonials Carefully/h3
pI?ve received emails where the sender?s standard signature is a general testimonial about how absolutely fabulous she is ? even when I?m not a potential client for what she?s selling. While it doesn?t bother me to see that sort of email signature, that may be a waste of a good testimonial. /p
pIt could have been put to more effective use on her website. After all, if you?re already communicating, you?ve gotten past the first obstacle. If you aren?t sending emails back and forth yet, you may need the help to get to that point./p
pUsing the same testimonial in multiple places can also be problematic. It may be a great review of your work, but if a prospective client sees it pop up all over, he may wonder if you don?t have any other testimonials. Showing variety is crucial to showing potential clients that you?re a great freelancer to work with./p

Recent Inspiration on Dribbble

I was recently invited to join Dribbble and am proud to be a member of such a great community. Here are some of my recent "likes" from the website.div class="feedflare"

The Importance of Showing Year-Round Gratitude

pa href='http://rss.buysellads.com/click.php?z=1259904k=f7b7931ec28da9e4ff2580bfd4eddb18a=22668c=226861717' target='_blank'
img src='http://rss.buysellads.com/img.php?z=1259904k=f7b7931ec28da9e4ff2580bfd4eddb18a=22668c=226861717' border='0' alt='' //a/pbr /pimg class="aligncenter imageborder size-full wp-image-22669" src="http://freelanceswitch.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/thank-you-note-coffee.jpg" alt="" width="549" height="365" //p
pIt?s easy to think about a href="http://freelanceswitch.com/clients/five-ways-to-spread-some-cheer/"doing good deeds during the holiday season/a, as giving (thanks and gifts) is pretty much society?s mantra from Thanksgiving to Christmas. But what about the rest of the year? Isn?t it good to be grateful in, say, March?/p
pAccording to a href="http://management.fortune.cnn.com/2011/11/23/why-gratitude-is-good-for-business-year-round/"this recent article in emFortune/em/a, gratitude is good for business no matter the month./p
blockquotepAs opposed to showing appreciation one day a year #8212; at Thanksgiving or New Year#8217;s or in an annual customer appreciation sale #8212; some businesses are building it into their daily and weekly plans and policies. And they are seeing the benefits to this approach: Workers are often more engaged when they feel appreciated and customers are more likely to come back and give referrals./p
p#8220;Gratitude motivates positive reciprocal behavior,#8221; says Randy Raggio, a marketing professor at the University of Richmond. If a customer believes that a business has his best interests at heart, that customer is more inclined to develop a long-term relationship with the business.?Fortune/p/blockquote
pHere are some ideas on how freelancers can a href="http://freelanceswitch.com/freelancing-essentials/support-your-supporters/"give thanks/a, no matter the time of year or season!/p
pspan id="more-22668"/span/p
h3Thank You Cards/h3
pRemember when you were a kid and your mother made you sit down at the kitchen table and write thank you cards out to the friends and family members who gave you birthday presents? She did it for a good reason?people appreciate them! /p
pIn this day and age of emails, texts, and Facebook messages, there?s nothing more personal than a hand written thank you card. It?s a great way to thank a potential new client for listening to your idea, or a client who has been with you for years. A simple, sincere thank you note shows your clients that they are important to you. And a href="http://freelanceswitch.com/finding/postcard-promotion-ideas-and-moo-giveaway/"getting something personal in your mailbox/a always makes people smile./p
pI remember I sent a thank you card after being interviewed for a job I really wanted. My note was sincere, and thanked the owner of the company for meeting with me after normal work hours. I ended up getting the job, and was tickled pink when I showed up to the office and noticed my carefully crafted thank you note was pinned to the cork board above his desk./p
h3A Small Gift/h3
pYou don?t have to break the bank when sending someone a thank you gift. Heck, homemade chocolate chip cookies always put me in a good mood. If your client is located far away, send them a gift card to an online store like Amazon.com where they can treat themselves to whatever their heart desires./p
h3Offer a Promotion or Sale/h3
pIf you have a client who uses your services on a steady basis, you can thank them with a reduced rate. For example, as a blogger you could offer a free blog post for every 10 you write, or as a photographer a discount on images after a certain amount. People love getting a deal, and are more apt to tout your services to others if they think you are fair on your pricing structure. Perhaps this is something you can offer during a particularly a href="http://freelanceswitch.com/finding/more-promotion-ideas-than-you-can-shake-a-fist-at/"dry period of work/a to help boost your sales and stay busy./p
pNo matter what line of work you do, saying thank you is crucial to building relationships. Taking that extra step to say thank you outside of an email or phone conversation will show your client that they are on your mind, and give you another reason to stay in touch with your clients./p
pDo you have a successful thank you note story you?d like to share? We?d love to hear it! Leave a comment below./p

25+ Resources for Starting a Freelance Photography Business

img src='http://rss.buysellads.com/img.php?z=1259904k=f7b7931ec28da9e4ff2580bfd4eddb18a=22378c=512846608' border='0' alt='' //a/pbr /p?Photographer? is one of those professional titles that many people want. And why not? Taking pictures is fun and exciting./p
pHowever, reality isn#8217;t so glamorous. According to a href="http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos264.htm"a report prepared by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)/a, ?More than half of all photographers are self-employed, a much higher proportion than for most occupations.? The BLS adds, ?Salaried photographers?most of whom work full time?tend to earn more than those who are self-employed.?/p
pIn short, what we have is a business that isn#8217;t a hotbed of jobs ? or high earnings for those who aren#8217;t employed as photographers. Not a pretty picture./p
pThe BLS continues with the killjoy theme by saying, ?Most photographers spend only a small portion of their work schedule actually taking photographs. Their most common activities are editing images on a computer?if they use a digital camera?and looking for new business?if they are self-employed.?/p
pHowever, similar things can be said about the music business. But people still pick up guitars and start to play. Likewise, the theatrical arts. It#8217;s tough to make it onto the stage or screen, but somewhere, there#8217;s an audition attracting hopeful actors right now./p
pOkay, so I#8217;ve acted like your parents and given you the ?Tough way to make a living, but I know you want to do it!? speech. Now let#8217;s get to work on helping you succeed in the business of photography./p
pspan id="more-22378"/span/p
h3How to Start a Successful Photography Business/h3
pimg class="alignnone imageborder size-full imageborder wp-image-22380" src="http://freelanceswitch.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/harrington.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="472" //p
pAs mentioned above, a lot of your professional time will be spent away from the camera. You#8217;ll need a first-class set of business skills to succeed as a photographer./p
pTo help you along the way, here#8217;s a href="http://johnharrington.com/"John Harrington/a, a Washington, DC-based photographer who has worked full-time in the business for decades. And he#8217;s very good at it./p
pWhile it#8217;s fun to admire the photos of President Obama in his portfolio, I urge you to head over to his a href="http://photobusinessforum.blogspot.com/"Photo Business News + Forum blog/a. While Harrington isn#8217;t a hyperactive, daily blog poster, he offers lengthy and well thought out essays on topics like contracts, photographers#8217; rights to shoot in public places, copyrights, and business skills./p
pIn addition to writing thoughtful blog posts, Harrington is also the author of the highly regarded book, ema href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1435454294/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8amp;tag=freelanceswitch-20amp;linkCode=as2amp;camp=217145amp;creative=399349amp;creativeASIN=1435454294"Best Business Practices for Photographers/a. /emIt covers successful interactions with clients, examples of proposals and contracts, negotiation skills, and the day-to-day operation of a professional photography business./p
pThen there#8217;s photography#8217;s famous first name, a href="http://selinamaitreya.com/"Selina/a. If you see your photography business as a spiritual journey, her ?synergy of spirit, soul, skill and sweat? approach will appeal to you./p
pWant some street-smart intelligence to go along with Selina#8217;s synergistic attributes? Read Dan Heller#8217;s a href="http://www.danheller.com/bizfaq.html"photography business FAQ/a./p
h3Professional Photography Contracts and Other Legal Issues/h3
pimg class="alignnone imageborder size-full wp-image-22390" src="http://freelanceswitch.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/photo-business.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="570" //p
pAs much as we#8217;d like to shoot whatever we want, whenever we want, the real world doesn#8217;t work that way. One of the best resources on the law as it applies to photography was created by a photographer who is also a lawyer. She#8217;s Carolyn Wright, and her a href="http://www.photoattorney.com/"Photo Attorney/a website is definitely worth a bookmark./p
pIf you#8217;re ready to start dealing with clients, don#8217;t work without a contract. Ever. Be sure to keep a href="http://photo.tutsplus.com/articles/news/10-critical-points-for-strong-photography-contracts/"10 Critical Points for Strong Photography Contracts/a in mind. This short, easy-to-understand tutorial is part of Envato#8217;s Phototuts+ series, a href="http://photo.tutsplus.com/sessions/the-photography-business/"The Photography Business/a./p
pNeed some ready-made contracts to for your photography business? Check out Tad Crawford#8217;s book, a href="http://www.allworth.com/book/?GCOI=58115100458460"emBusiness and Legal Forms for Photographers/em/a. It offers 34 commonly used forms ? and instructions on how to use them. Each form is included on the CD that comes with the book./p
h3Don#8217;t Buy ? Rent!/h3
pimg class="alignnone imageborder size-full wp-image-22383" src="http://freelanceswitch.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/borrow-lenses.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="340" //p
pIf you#8217;re like a lot of new pro photographers, you can#8217;t wait to get your hands on some top-of-the-line gear. Then you start researching the prices of said gear. Ouch. Expensive./p
pSo, what#8217;s a rookie photographer on a budget to do? In a word: rent./p
pFor a few hundred bucks and a visit to a href="http://www.borrowlenses.com/"BorrowLenses.com/a, you can rent a Canon 5D or a Nikon D3 for a couple of weeks. Try #8216;em before you buy #8216;em! And when those sweet assignments really start rolling into your studio, emthen/em you#8217;ll be able to afford to buy your dream gear./p
pThe same advice applies to studio space. You can rent that as well. Easiest way to find out who rents space in your town is simply to call other professional photographers and ask them. After all, studio space that isn#8217;t being used is just costing money./p
pAnd that#8217;s a tip for you when you acquire your own studio space. Use it as another one of your income streams./p
h3Selling Your Photography/h3
pimg class="alignnone imageborder size-full wp-image-22386" src="http://freelanceswitch.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/burns.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="340" //p
pSince finding photography clients is going to be a never-ending quest, you#8217;re going to need some razor-sharp marketing and sales skills. So, steer your browser over to a href="http://www.burnsautoparts.com/"Burns Auto Parts/a, which bills itself as ?the oddly-named brainchild of Leslie Burns.? A San Diego-based a href="http://burnsautoparts.com/BAPsite/Index.html"creative marketing consultant/a and a href="http://burnstheattorney.com/"intellectual property attorney/a, Burns writes, speaks, and a href="http://www.burnsautoparts.com/blog/"blogs/a on promoting your work./p
pIf there were such a thing, Leslie Burns would easily win the award for the most offbeat business book title, a href="http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/burnsautoparts"emTell the World You Don#8217;t Suck: modern marketing for commercial photographers/em/a. Best takeaway: You may think that you could never shoot for the likes of Nike, emThe New York Times Magazine/em, or Apple. So you don#8217;t even bother trying to contact them. Why are you depriving them of the opportunity to work with you? If you shy away from approaching your dream clients, you#8217;ll never do any business with them./p
pWant a photography business book with a title that#8217;s, ahem, more business-like? Burns has you covered. a href="http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/burnsautoparts"emBusiness Basics for the Successful Commercial Photographer/em/a offers hard-to-find things like scripts for cold calling potential clients, templates for job estimates and invoices, and a questionnaire to use on that wonderful day when your phone rings and it#8217;s someone interested in hiring you./p
pWhile Burns#8217; books are very good at showing you the basics of photography marketing and sales, you#8217;ll still need people to practice those skills on. Let#8217;s get you introduced to some real, live buyers./p
pIf you#8217;d like to get assignments from advertising agencies, book and magazine publishers, and major corporations, get an account with a href="http://agencyaccess.com/"Agency Access/a. Since its recent acquisition of AdBase, Agency Access now has one of the world#8217;s largest contact databases for creative freelancers. You can take Agency Access for a test-drive via its a href="http://agencyaccess.com/trial"three-day free trial/a./p
pIf you#8217;ve spent any time hanging out in your public library#8217;s reference section, you#8217;re probably familiar with the annual emPhotographer#8217;s Market/em directory. The good news is that you don#8217;t have to leave your studio to access this valuable tool. Simply go to a href="http://www.artistsmarketonline.com/"Artist#8217;s Market Online/a and sign up for a 7-day free trial./p
pAnother good subscription-based resource is called a href="http://www.mastheads.org/"Mastheads.org/a. It#8217;s where you go to find the name of the photo editor at that magazine you#8217;ve always wanted to shoot for./p
pPrefer not to deal with the challenges of finding clients to assign photographic jobs to you? Welcome to the world of stock photography, where you can make money from what you#8217;ve already shot. Your go-to guy for learning the stock photography business is a href="http://www.photosource.com/"Rohn Engh/a. This veteran pro runs his stock photography business from a farm in rural Wisconsin. Which just goes to show you that you don#8217;t have to be in The Big City to succeed in the business of photography./p
pIn addition to working on assignment and selling stock photography, there#8217;s fine art photography. It#8217;s what you see hanging on art gallery walls./p
pIf fine art photography is your life#8217;s ambition, you#8217;ll still need to treat it like a business. That#8217;s where a href="http://www.artistcareertraining.com/"Artist Career Training/a comes in. ATC#8217;s goal is to ?help you make a better living making art,? and it offers a series of courses for beginning and experienced photographers./p
pWant help with getting your work into the leading galleries? Then book some consultation time with a href="http://mvswanson.com/"Mary Virginia Swanson/a, an internationally renowned photography author and editor. She knows everybody who#8217;s somebody in the fine art photography world./p
h3Your Photography Portfolio/h3
pimg class="alignnone size-full imageborder wp-image-22387" src="http://freelanceswitch.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/photoshelter.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="410" //p
pDoesn#8217;t matter what kind of buyers you#8217;ll be dealing with. They#8217;ll want to see your photography portfolio. If you#8217;re like most photographers, you probably don#8217;t lack for work that could go into your portfolio, but buyers are busy people. They only have time to view your very best work./p
pIn the photography world, the word ?portfolio? can mean two things: It#8217;s the physical book that you bring to a meeting with an advertising agency art director or the photo editor at a magazine. And it#8217;s that thing that lives on your website and/or blog./p
pFor help with creating and editing your online and hard-copy portfolio, I recommend the uniquely named blog, a href="http://blog.noplasticsleeves.com/"No Plastic Sleeves/a. The a href="http://www.focalpress.com/Book.aspx?id=16108"book of the same name/a is also worth a read. PSTuts+ offers a brief, easy to implement tutorial, a href="http://photo.tutsplus.com/articles/post-processing-articles/10-steps-for-building-a-photography-portfolio-to-be-proud-of/"10 Steps for Building a Photography Portfolio to Be Proud Of/a./p
pMost of the time, photo buyers will ask for a link to your website so they can take a look at your online portfolio. A few will also want to see your printed portfolio, which is often referred to as your book./p
pWhen this happens, stand up, take a bow, and give yourself a round of applause. An buyer who wants to see your book is emvery/em interested in your work./p
pSo, time to get busy building one. First thing to do is order a copy of ema href="http://publishyourphotographybook.com/"Publish Your Photography Book/a. /emIt has a very good section on self-publishing. Next, sign up for a free account with a href="http://www.blurb.com/"Blurb.com/a, download the free BookSmart software, and start your photography book layout./p
pOkay, we#8217;ve covered printed portfolios. Now let#8217;s look at their electronic counterparts. Many photographers take the website/blog approach. Meaning that they have a website with online portfolios showing their best photography. Along with the website, they have a blog that describes recently completed client work, personal projects, or whatever else they#8217;re pointing a camera at./p
pWhen it comes to websites, many photographers would rather do a shoot among unfriendly lions and nasty alligators than deal with the vagaries of HTML and CSS. For them, there are turnkey services like a href="http://www.photoshelter.com/"PhotoShelter/a and a href="http://livebooks.com/"LiveBooks/a. Both of these services offer template-based websites that can be built via a browser-based interface./p
pThen there are those photographers with a web development background. There are quite a few of us web-heads running around with cameras, and the Phototuts+ article a href="http://photo.tutsplus.com/tutorials/internet/how-to-create-a-photography-website-with-wordpress/"How To Create a Photography Website With WordPress/a is our idea of a good time. If you#8217;re a WordPress-loving photographer who has a hankering for one of those really cool photo slideshows, check out the a href="http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/nextgen-gallery/"NextGEN Gallery plugin/a. You can use it to run one online gallery ? or dozens of them!/p
pOn to your blog. If you#8217;ve never photoblogged before, Phototuts+ has you covered with a two-part tutorial, a href="http://photo.tutsplus.com/tutorials/internet/the-beginners-guide-to-creating-a-photoblog-part-1/"The Beginner?s Guide to Creating a Photoblog/a. Start with a href="http://photo.tutsplus.com/tutorials/internet/the-beginners-guide-to-creating-a-photoblog-part-1/"Part One/a, then head over to a href="http://photo.tutsplus.com/tutorials/the-beginner%E2%80%99s-guide-to-creating-a-photoblog-part-2/"Part Two/a./p

pIf you#8217;re interested in improving a specific aspect of your work, say, wedding photography or nature photography, a workshop might be a better bet than a monthly Meetup. a href="http://art-support.com/workshops.htm"Art-Support.com/a has a comprehensive list of workshops in the United States and other countries./p
h3Photography Workshops for Fun and Profit/h3
pYou probably won#8217;t be a photographer for long before someone will ask you if you offer workshops. And you#8217;ve probably attended a few yourself./p
pIn some quarters, workshops are viewed as a sign of a professional photographer whose career is in decline. However, there are plenty of pros who ignore the stigma and see workshops as the money-maker that they are. And they offer them. Want to offer your own photography workshop? h3Organizations for Professional Photographers/h3
pBefore you delve into the following list, let#8217;s be clear on why professional photographer organizations exist: They#8217;re not going to be a major source of clients for you. That#8217;s not their purpose. What you will gain by joining is a community of other photographers. That community will help you grow as an artist and a business person./p
