The Pull of Procrastination

pI try very hard not to procrastinate. I?ve been this way my whole life. In college, I?d work ahead of the syllabus just so I knew I would get everything done. For my job at the magazine, I work months, maybe a good year, ahead of time to plan and execute some feature stories./p
pI chalk this up to being a busy person. In college and grad schools, I worked a lot. I didn?t have a ton of free time so I had to plan on getting assignments done. In my working life, I have a job, I freelance, and I volunteer my time by sitting on the board of two nonprofits. I like to do it all, but I have been learning how to a href="http://freelanceswitch.com/freelance-news/case-studies/learn-to-say-no/"say no/a./p
pI also teach an undergraduate course at a local college. In my syllabus it clearly states that if students miss their deadline, they fail the assignment. In the real world, if they fail to pass in a story to their editor, they risk losing their jobs. This deadline also helps me when I go to grade them. I want to be sure I have enough time to read through each students? work and not rush through it./p
pWhen I sawa href="http://blogs.hbr.org/johnson/2012/03/procrastination-is-essential-t.html" this article /aon how procrastination is essential to innovation, I was intrigued. I know people who thrive on procrastination as a means to get anything done. To be honest, these people drive me nuts. I find that when you are working on a team and one person puts all of their duties off until the last minute, the entire project suffers. However, when you aren?t working in a team, maybe there really is something to be said about the stress of adrenaline.span id="more-26832"/span/p
pLike the author of this piece (Whitney Johnson), people tend to do the fun tasks first and put off the other, not-so-fun tasks for later. Johnson had finished her book?something that had been on her bucket list for years?but was having trouble getting everything else ready for the book launch./p
pThe prospect of building a website, creating a speaker?s sheet, record an audio Qamp;A, write an ebook to accompany the book, and other such tasks didn?t have an immediate payoff. She could imagine her readers holding her newly published book in their hands and reading it, but not so about the nuts and bolts behind the publication push./p
blockquotepI#8217;ve come to realize that the anxiety caused by procrastination is actually a critical component to innovation. Research supports this. Anxiety, in the right quantities, can propel us forward. ?a href="http://blogs.hbr.org/johnson/2012/03/procrastination-is-essential-t.html"Whitney Johnson/a/p/blockquote
pThe research she sites is a study published in the Journal of Management where NASA scientists and engineers found that performance increase when deadlines shorten. This makes sense?you know you need to get something done by a certain date and the closer to the date you get the more you have to do. But the study also found that when the deadlines became too short, performance declined. Have you ever pulled an a href="http://freelanceswitch.com/freelance-news/commentary-analysis/the-benefits-of-working-in-short-time-blocks-part-1/"all-nighter/a? Did you pass that exam or get an A on that project?/p
pJohnson found some ways to deal with the anxiety surrounded by her book launch. Here they are, with a little twist towards your own freelance situations./p
h3View the Work as its own Project/h3
pJohnson?s anxiety was fueled by the fact that she had never launched a book before. There are lots of things freelancers have to try for the first time. She suggests looking back on past projects you have completed to find similar problems that you have already solved. Stuck on a project? See if you have worked through a similar one in the past. I find a a href="http://freelanceswitch.com/productivity/effective-prioritizing-for-freelancers/"to do list/a works wonders./p
h3Write Your Way Through/h3
pJohnson wrote a book about this process. You don?t need to go that far, but perhaps you can turn your frustrations into a post for your blog. Experts say the best way to beat your a href="http://freelanceswitch.com/finding/just-get-going/"writers? block/a is to just write?about anything!/p
blockquotepWhen you can zoom out and view your experience in the abstract, you create the necessary distance to be objective about your own performance. ?a href="http://blogs.hbr.org/johnson/2012/03/procrastination-is-essential-t.html"Whitney Johnson/a/p/blockquote
h3Collaborate and Accept Help/h3
pJohnson?s anxiety about doing something she had never done before forced her to reach out for help?something she wouldn?t have been willing to do before. Other experts, friends, even other people you?ve networked with can give you insight on a problem in a way you yourself would never have considered. /p
pThey may also have access to knowledge and tools that you don?t have that will help you tremendously. Don?t be afraid to ask for help or even just to talk?you never know what will come out of a brainstorming session./p
pI?ve come to terms with the fact that a little procrastination can be the boot that kicks you in the butt to move forward. I still don?t think it?s a healthy way to do business?don?t we all already have enough stress and sleepless nights in our lives??I can understand that some people find it easier to work under pressure/p
pHow about you? Are you a procrastinator? Do you have any tips on how freelancers can a href="http://freelanceswitch.com/working/mental-exercises-to-get-ahead-with-the-freelancing/"beat the pull of procrastination/a?/p
