Maybe they?re sick of a href="http://freelanceswitch.com/freelance-news/case-studies/leap-to-freelance/"working for someone else/a. Maybe they want the freedom to a href="http://freelanceswitch.com/freelance-news/commentary-analysis/myths-working-at-home/"work from home/a. Perhaps they are tired of the a href="http://freelanceswitch.com/freelance-news/commentary-analysis/9-to-5-job-done/"9 to 5 /aroutine. There are too many reasons to list, really, and we talk a lot about these reasons on this blog./p
pBut there is one big reason that we don?t discuss often. Many people choose to start a freelance career because it?s better for their health. I?m not talking about a href="http://freelanceswitch.com/freelance-news/commentary-analysis/deal-with-stress-in-a-positive-way/"stress/a?I mean people that have medical conditions may find it easier to etch out their own freelance career rather than work for someone else./p
pI recently found a woman who did this very thing. We?ll call her Susan for the sake of this blog post. Most of Susan?s clients don?t even know that since she was in her early twenties, she has been suffering from lymphedema. This condition leaves her right leg swollen from fluid retention and tissue swelling. ?To be precise, my right leg is 20% thicker than my left,? Susan says./p
pI thought I would share Susan?s story with you as she told it to me. Read on in her own words:span id="more-30359"/span/p

emI?m not in pain. It can be uncomfortable and it cannot be cured, only reduced. From time to time, my leg will flare up with a skin infection due to my lowered immune system. This could be anything from once per fortnight to every other month. It?s completely unpredictable./em/p
pemA few years ago, it became apparent I couldn?t hold down a proper 9 to 5 job while being able to rest my leg (keeping it elevated) and seeing my specialist. Lymphedema is not a disability, so employers tend to not be as lenient with sufferers on any sick days, for doctor?s visits, etcetera. Freelancing has given me the opportunity to look after my leg property. I can grab that emergency doctor?s appointment if I need it./em/p
pemDue to the size difference in my right leg and foot, I can?t wear proper shoes at the moment, so freelancing keeps me from the awkward feeling of being unprofessional and wearing trainers to work in an office. If I?m randomly sick, I can take a couple of days off and work over the weekend to make up for it. As a freelancer, I don?t have the feeling of guilt or paranoia that my coworkers think I?m being lazy, avoiding work, or not working as hard as them, as I only have to answer to myself and my clients./em/p
pemWhen my leg flares up and I need to keep it elevated, I just work from bed with my laptop. It means I don?t lose any time working and I can make sure I don?t create any unnecessary complications due to not resting my leg properly. I can work in a way which allows me to consistently meet my deadlines./em/p
pemOver the next couple of months, I?m going to be taking part in some intensive treatment for my leg. It will mean attending a specialist clinic for two hours a day over the course of two weeks. If I was in a ?normal? job, it would mean turning up at the office every day for two weeks at 11 am, which isn?t always possible. As a freelancer, I don?t have that problem./em/p
pemMy leg is the number one reason why I won?t go back to a normal job and why I work so hard as a freelancer. I feel so lucky to be able to look after myself and my leg property. Since I?ve been freelancing, my health has improved so much and my leg has lost so much fluid that I have gone from not being able to wear trainers at all to now being able to fit into ballerina flats./em
/p/blockquote
pSusan isn?t the only freelancer with this sort of experience. There must be many more freelancers out there who find the freelance lifestyle the necessary way to take care of themselves. /p
pDepending on where you live, a href="http://freelanceswitch.com/freelance-news/commentary-analysis/health-care-for-freelancers/"health insurance/a may be an issue for you if you have a preexisting condition. But the benefits of a flexible schedule and the ease of being able to work in a comfortable atmosphere are hard to argue with./p
pI?d like to thank Susan for sharing her story with me, and allowing me to share it with all of you./p
