pThanks to the internet, reaching prospective clients has never been easier. /p
pWhether you are a freelance web designer, writer or international mountain guide, you are likely to have a a href="http://freelanceswitch.com/freelance-writing/website-copywriting-sins/"website/a, twitter account, LinkedIn profile and blog ? emand so you should/em. Without these tools, most of us would be lost. /p
pThe trouble with the internet is that it makes publishing and communication dangerously easy. With the ?publish?, ?send?, ?tweet? or ?share? button ever present at the top of your screen, online business communications ? emand that is what they are/em ? are often shared prematurely. /p
pNo matter what business you are in, for freelancers, first impressions are crucial.span id="more-21373"/span/p
h3Don?t Let your Guard Down/h3
pAs a freelancer, everything associated with your name that could potentially be seen by a prospect should be seen as a business communication. It should represent you in the best possible way and convince people that you are someone they might like to use in the future. /p
pThough others may use Twitter to publish misspelled updates on their every movement or observation, emyou/em are using it for business. emYour/em Tweets should be polished, relevant and functional. /p
h3Set Your Own Standards/h3
pOne of the most common mistakes is to send emails without proper editing. Your client?s emails might be barely comprehensible, but this doesn?t mean you can indulge in the same carelessness. /p
pA polished email, whether it is one line or 500 words long will give the impression of professionalism and reliability. If it contains spelling mistakes, grammatical errors or appears confused, this will give a poor impression of your professionalism (especially if you are a copywriter!) /p
h3You Have Complete Control ? and Responsibility/h3
pWhen you freelance, you are responsible for emall/em of your business communications. Whether it?s a blog post, a static web page, an email, tweet or LinkedIn profile, if it?s going to be seen by prospects or existing clients, it needs to be strongpolished/strong and professional. /p
h3?But I?m A Freelancer. I Don?t Have Time?/h3
pOne of the major problems that freelancers face is the lack of time they have for marketing themselves. Even when you have more work than you can accept, you still feel the need to build connections, line up future projects and maintain your online presence. Unfortunately this often means that proofreading is rushed, or worse, completely neglected. The urge to ?send? or ?publish? is just too tempting. /p
blockquote class="pullquote"pUnfortunately this often means that proofreading is rushed, or worse, completely neglected./p/blockquote
pWe are all guilty of it. When you?ve got a pressing deadline who has the time to read over each blog post 3 or 4 times? /p
pThe truth is: if you are emreally/em too busy to proofread your communications properly, you are obviously doing something right. You have lots of work from clients who love what you do. Ask yourself, ?do I need to send/publish this now? Could it wait until I do have time to give it one more read through with fresh eyes?? In most cases the answer will be ?yes?. /p
pGood chefs follow the rule that if something isn?t exactly right; it doesn?t go on the plate. /p
pApply this to strongALL/strong your business communications. Be meticulous. Ensure you always represent yourself in the best possible way. /p
pstrongSo, over to you. What are your proofreading tips? How do you make sure your online communications are always polished and professional?/strong/p
