pIt used to be hard for me to say ?no? to people. I think the sheer confusion people have over what freelancers actually do all day makes us an easy target. But just because many of us work from home, doesn?t mean we aren?t working. On the contrary, I?d argue, we have to work even harder./p
pLately, I?ve been getting better at saying no. Here?s why./p
pIn October I was laid off from my editing gig at the regional magazine I was working with for three years. The owners/publishers were in money trouble and they had been trying to sell the title for several months with no luck. I loved my job, but knew that the magazine needed new leadership if it was going to be able to grow. a href="http://freelanceswitch.com/freelance-news/commentary-analysis/happiness-and-economics/"I was sad, but OK about it/a./p
pI started taking on freelance work left and right?it seemed to come out of the woodwork for some reason! I accepted an adjunct teaching position for the spring semester, a part time online marketing position, and was working to finish up the wedding magazine I edit and send it to the printer. I was the busiest laid-off person I knew.span id="more-25562"/span/p
pI also a href="http://freelanceswitch.com/interviews/importance-community-part-iii/"serve on the boards/a of two nonprofit organizations I?m very passionate about. Keeping all my little tasks in order was getting hard, and I looked into ways to help organize myself./p
pThen someone bought the magazine and offered me my job back in January. I thought about it for a long time. They were going to hire the team back and were going to let us redesign the entire magazine and let us run it the way we thought it should be run. It was a tempting offer, and I took it./p
pNow that I had a job editing a monthly magazine, I was overwhelmed with all the other stuff I had to do. I ended up dropping a couple of my freelancing gigs where I was putting in more time than my paycheck was worth. It felt good to finally shed some weight and be able to pick and choose what I wanted to do./p
pI had been involved in a lengthy and time consuming process of being a part of a small group who led the charge in choosing a new CEO for one of the nonprofits I work for. When I was asked to take charge on another time-consuming project for them, I politely declined./p
pI was recently turned on to a href="http://www.thedailymuse.com/career/let-them-down-easy-4-ways-to-nicely-say-no/"The Daily Muse/a, and really enjoyed this post on how to say no nicely./p
blockquotepAs an entrepreneur, setting limits for what you take on is essential?not only for your sanity, but also for the health of your business. Opportunities for new partnerships, projects, and initiatives come at you nearly every day, and there?s simply no way you can say yes to everything. ?a href="http://www.thedailymuse.com/career/let-them-down-easy-4-ways-to-nicely-say-no/"The Daily Muse/a/p/blockquote
pI am a Type A personality, and my mantra has been ?if you want something done right, do it yourself.? That pertains to my job, my freelancing, or hanging curtains in my living room (which I coached my husband through, much to his dismay)./p
pIt?s not that I don?t want to take on more work or volunteer responsibilities?I sincerely do?but more work means something that I am already currently doing is going to suffer. And I can?t let that happen./p
pThe best thing you can do when saying no is to be completely honest, without being rude. Tell them why you are saying no and, if possible, offer another resource or offer to help in a lesser extent./p
blockquotepBy taking on projects you shouldn?t be or saying yes to partnerships you?d rather not, you?re not helping anyone out in the long run?and you?re doing a big disservice to yourself. So, next time, don?t be afraid to just say no. And don?t feel guilty! If you do it the right way, there won?t be any hard feelings. ?a href="http://www.thedailymuse.com/career/let-them-down-easy-4-ways-to-nicely-say-no/"The Daily Muse/a/p/blockquote
pI get asked to help out with local and statewide events all the time, and there aren?t enough hours in the day to sit on a planning board and have meetings with my schedule. When asked to take on a leadership role, I politely decline and offer my services to help promote the event in other ways. Maybe it?s plugging it on my personal and business a href="http://freelanceswitch.com/freelance-news/commentary-analysis/facebook-timeline/"Facebook/a pages and Twitter feeds. Maybe it?s passing out posters to local businesses./p
pUp until 2012, I really did think I could do it all?but I can?t. And that?s OK! My goal is to choose to do what is important to me and what I enjoy, while not slacking on my other commitments. Saying no is a freedom I can now employ without feeling guilty or bad. And it feels so good!/p
